Registered Tourist Accommodation

Registered Tourist Accommodation

End Of Year Analysis

As of January 2026, the sector consists of 119 operating establishments offering 6,423 bedrooms.

The total number of accommodation establishments registered with the Product Quality Unit increased slightly, up from 116 recorded the previous year; an increase of 2.6%. This growth was predominantly driven by the expansion of the apartments category of accommodation, which rose by 8 establishments, accounting for a 17.8% increase. In contrast, the number of hotels declined by 5 or -8.1% whilst the guest houses remained unchanged.

Despite the increase in properties, overall bedroom capacity fell by -5.5% from 6,798 as at January 2025 to 6,423 as at January 2026. The reduction was primarily due to a noticeable decline of 413 rooms, with guest houses experiencing a decline in the bedroom count of 17 bedrooms. The reduced bedroom count observed in the guest house category is largely attributable to a few larger properties no longer being enlisted in the pool, combined with the increasing registration of smaller-scale guest houses.

Data as of January 2026 shows a sector that is balanced between hotels and apartments, with capacity levels remaining predominantly concentrated within the hotel segment. Hotels remain the main source of room supply, whilst apartments and guest houses play a complementary role, offering smaller-scale and potentially more personalised lodging options to visitors on the island.

Notably, larger high-end hotel capacity has declined temporarily, primarily due to property closures for significant renovations, with projected reopening dates in 2026.  An increase in the registration and inspections of apartments was also evident. Ongoing sectoral investment is clearly apparent, highlighting new ownership opportunities at a few mature establishments along the South Coast.

Overall, the tourist accommodation sector reflects a stable accommodation base with strong hotel dominance in bedroom capacity and a diversified mix of property types, thereby supporting year-round high occupancy levels and well-established tourism marketing efforts.
